What is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist?

Occupational Psychologists apply psychological knowledge, theory and practice to the world of work. We are trained to help organisations get the best performance from their employees and to improve employees’ experience of working.

We apply expert knowledge to all levels of working and may work on organisational issues, as well as issues at an individual or team level.

This level of professionalism has the following key benefits for our clients:

  • We follow the British Psychological Society’s Code of Ethics and Conduct
  • We only use evidence based techniques
  • We monitor the effectiveness of our work
  • We only practice in areas where we are qualified to do so
  • We are continually developing our professional skills

The training to become an Occupational Psychologist starts off with an undergraduate degree in Psychology (BSc), this is then followed by a post graduate Masters Degree in Occupational Psychology. We then follow a programme that involves working in a number of different areas under the supervision of a Chartered Occupational Psychologist for a number of years (averaging 4). All of this work is written up and assessed by the British Psychological Society on a yearly basis. Once this programme has been completed and the assessor is satisfied that you are operating at the correct technical and ethical standard you are then given Chartered Psychologist Status. This status then allows you to be on the HPC list (Health Professional Council).

Within my training I have specialised in working with individuals to help optimize their working experience. The training doesn’t stop at Chartership, as Psychologists we continually monitor new research to see how this can impact on the work that we do. We have to complete Continued Professional Development on a yearly basis to make sure that we are continuing to offer the highest level of service.

I am also an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, which is awarded in recognition of several years experience and contribution to the field of Psychology.
